West Ham United vs Liverpool predictions

Liverpool's race is almost run. A defeat by Everton on Wednesday has left their Premier League title hopes hanging by a thread, not least because Manchester City and Arsenal were victorious in their respective midweek assignments.

Anything other than a victory on Saturday would in effect knock the Reds out of the battle. Even with a win at the London Stadium, they would be rank outsiders.

Jurgen Klopp will be looking for a much improved performance compared to the one his team delivered against Everton. Liverpool were beaten at Goodison Park for the first time since 2010 - and they deserved to be.

Once again, Liverpool were wasteful in front of goal. Everton defended manfully, but Klopp's side had enough chances to find the back of the net. Not for the first time in recent weeks, their profligacy let them down.

More surprisingly, they did not match the hunger and desire shown by the Everton players. “It was not good enough,” Klopp admitted, before apologising to the Liverpool supporters.

This downturn can be traced back to that extraordinary 4-3 defeat by Manchester United in the FA Cup last month. Liverpool should have won that game easily, but they let their arch-rivals back into it.

Something similar happened in a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford in the league, before Liverpool were beaten twice at home by Atalanta and Crystal Palace.

The Reds have run out of steam. When Klopp announced in January that this would be his final season at the helm, he revealed that he had run out of energy. The same looks to have happened to his team, both mentally and physically.

Liverpool look jaded. They have not been playing with their characteristic intensity of late. Barring a dramatic turnaround, Klopp’s swansong will not end with a title parade at Anfield.

West Ham vs Liverpool betting tips

Anything other than an away win in Saturday’s early kick-off would surely end Liverpool’s Premier League title chances.

Liverpool to win and over 2.5 goals - 10/11 (Copybet)

Liverpool must pick themselves up again after their latest disappointment.

All is not lost yet, even if it must feel that way. A win in the lunchtime game on Saturday would see Klopp’s men move level on points with Arsenal on top spot.

West Ham United have been struggling recently too. They were thumped 5-2 by Crystal Palace in their latest encounter, with the Hammers 4-0 down after just half an hour.

David Moyes’ men have won only one of their last eight encounters in all competitions. The Scot’s future has still not been decided and, with many West Ham fans hoping for a change in the dugout, the atmosphere at the London Stadium could turn toxic if the team ends the season poorly.

For all that, West Ham have some quality attacking players at their disposal. They will give Liverpool’s backline something to think about.

Yet only the bottom three have worse defensive records than the Hammers. Goals are on the cards here.

West Ham to score first - 17/10 (Copybet)

Before the start of the season, few predicted Liverpool would be in a Premier League title race. Finishing four or six points adrift of top spot would therefore not represent a disaster.

It will still feel painful to have fallen away late on, but Liverpool were arguably hanging in there for a while. There is one measure in particular which illustrates this.

Throughout the season Klopp’s side have relied on comebacks. They have conceded the first goal in 15 of their 34 Premier League matches, compared to seven for Arsenal and 11 for Manchester City.

Liverpool still managed to collect a division-high 23 points after conceding first, but it is hard to sustain that over the course of a campaign.

It has been a particular issue away from home: Liverpool’s hosts have broken the deadlock in nine of 17 games. That is more than bottom-half teams like Brentford and Bournemouth.

West Ham were not in action in midweek, so they should be fresher than the Reds. That is another reason to back this bet.

Darwin Nunez to score any time - 23/20 (Copybet)

Darwin Nunez is not the only Liverpool player who has passed up golden opportunities of late, but he more than anyone epitomises their wastefulness in front of goal.

Only Erling Haaland (30) has missed more big chances than Nunez (26) this season. But while Haaland has scored 20 Premier League goals, the Liverpool frontman has just 11 to his name.

Meanwhile Dominic Calvert-Lewin is the only player in the division to have underperformed his expected goals to a greater extent than Nunez.

Patience is beginning to run thin and the Uruguay international really needs to respond this weekend.

He may well do so. For all his faults, Nunez continues to get himself into good positions in and around the penalty area. He is bound to score again some point soon.
