Wigan Athletic linked with double move for Barnsley’s star centre-backs

Reliable journalist Alan Nixon has claimed that Championship side Wigan Athletic are keeping an eye on Barnsley’s star centre-backs Liam Lindsay and Ethan Pinnock.

Barnsley centre-back partners Liam Lindsay and Ethan Pinnock are both attracting interest from Championship side Wigan Athletic, journalist Alan Nixon has claimed.

Nixon posted on his Twitter on Sunday morning (see below) that the Latics are “looking at” both Lindsay and Pinnock, who have been star performances for Daniel Stendel’s side over the course of the 2018/19 League One season.

Scottish defender Lindsay has had a strong campaign at Oakwell this season, playing 43 times in all competitions (Transfermarkt). A number of sides have been linked with a move for the 21-year-old in the upcoming transfer window, with Celtic, Leeds United and Aston Villa among the sides reportedly taking an interest.

Pinnock has also been a mainstay in Stendel’s Barnsley side this season, forming a strong centre-back partnership with Lindsay. The 25-year-old has played 48 times in all competitions (Transfermarkt) and was the subject of a bid from Brentford in January, which the Tykes rejected.

Much thanks to the strong partnership between Lindsay and Pinncok, Barnsley are right amongst the fight for a place in the Championship next season. They currently sit in 2nd place in the League One table, boasting the best defensive record in the league with 36 goals conceded. Sunderland sit two points behind them in 3rd but with a game in hand.

Should Barnsley win promotion to the Championship, they will have a much better chance of holding on to the defensive duo this summer. But, if Barnsley remain in League One and Wigan stay up, they could have a battle on their hands to keep the important pair.
