Tom Lunn's boosted double

  • Firefox and Dinoblue both to win now 30/1

Firefox

Firefox was unfortunate in the running at Cheltenham Festival's Supreme Novices' Hurdle in March, but couldn't make up for what was an unlucky run there to win at Aintree a month later either, being held just, by Mystical Power.

Slade Steel won with a bit in hand at Cheltenham Festival and that was his last run which should make him a bit fresher coming into this contest.

It's no surprise why he's a 5/4 shot and not a bigger price considering the level of competition.

But he's tough for me to back at that price with the potential of Firefox getting a kinder run-in.

The Gordon Elliott-trained horse was only just denied by Mystical Power last time out when rallying and could have a better tactical approach to things which could eek out some improvement to the finish.

Slade Steel could progress further but Firefox has that consistency against this level and looked a top runner both times which makes 8/1 big value.

Daddy Long Legs

Brentford Hope has been incredibly impressive for trainer Harry Derham this season winning his last two contests.

But it's going to be tough for him to take that on further carrying top-weight against some unexposed sorts here.

Especially when only just doing enough last time out to beat Holly.

Daddy Long Legs returned from 555 days off, on his first run for trainer Willie Mullins at Thurles in November 2023 and impressed as the 11/8 favourite to win by 13 lengths.

He was pulled up next time out in a race won by Caldwell Potter and then disappointed again when sixth to Ballyburn, again at Leopardstown.

But he went for a run in Britain just over a week ago as the 1/7 favourite in a weak Class 4 Novice hurdle.

It's unclear as to why he went there, but it wouldn't be surprising if it was to give him a go at winning again, gain his confidence and brush off the cobwebs once again after 80 days away.

He made no mistake at Ludlow winning by three lengths to the much lesser rated second place, but it will be a great win for the owner Mrs J Donnelly who just recently lost the superstar Shishkin.

Daddy Long Legs is unexposed and represents a strong danger off an Irish mark of 135 and only five-years-old, and is already favourite in a strong field.

Dinoblue

Mark Walsh gets up on the Willie Mullins-trained Dinoblue for the seventh consecutive race on the mare.

She was only denied by 3/4 of a length to Limerick Lace last time out at Cheltenham Festival in the Mares' Chase but that was her first go over 2m4f and could be a big danger as the favourite back down to a straight 2m.

Her form ahead of Gentleman De Mee is top form that reads as though she's capable of beating Gentleman De Mee again but also the second favourite, Captain Guinness.

Captain Guinness was pulled up behind Dinoblue at Leopardstown in the Christmas meeting .

But the geldings are giving away 7lb to the mare who gets a strong chance to return to winning ways and then came third behind Dinoblue in the Dublin Chase going 14 lengths behind the strong mare.

Three Card Brag

Three Card Brag is a bit of a big each-way punt for the 3m1f Champion Novice Chase.

Jack Kennedy opts for American Mike, giving Sam Ewing the ride on the seven-year-old.

But he's a huge price given he's not ran terribly in defeat, to Monty's Star and Corbetts Cross.

Both times as favourite which makes them disappointing for backers but it could pay to keep the faith.

He's been off since New Year's Eve's Punchestown race on heavy ground when no match for Monty's Star.

But if his jumping has improved he could be a big shock to many, even though he's always shaped as a potential top chaser.

He was also comfortably beaten by Corbetts Cross, where Monty's Star came third.

Ultimately, novice chasers are difficult to predict a lot of the time and it will all depend on his progress over the last four months but he's got good form when jumping poorly, so it stands to reason he can go on from that with more fluency.

Apeeling

Fifth to She's Quality at Newbury in August who has gone on to run close behind in two Group 1 fillies stakes a month later, just under six lengths off of Porta Fortuna.

She's reappeared since with two more defeats this season but still remains a 94-rated filly which helps set the form.

Especially as Apeeling was then second to Romantic Style who went on to win a Group 3 at Deauville this month as well as a listed race at Newmarket a month after winning at Yarmouth against this filly.

Dropping to 5f might suit even more and she clearly has ability based on her form and should have more potential than her rivals in this race, with the addition of top experience in three races in 2023.
